ALS from Walpole and endorsed by Hamilton first commenting on Lady Emma Hamilton "good sense" among other compliments. The first part of the letter is a critique of the artistry of antique vases, in response to the publication of Hamilton's work, Collection of engravings from ancient vases. The rest of the letter is a "catalogue of the horrors" that are occuring in France commenting both on friends and then on the more general slaughter by Parisian mobs in 1792 as well as the capturing of Louis XVI and his family.

Sir William Hamilton was a British diplomat, ambassador to Naples (1764-1800), and an archaeologist. His wife, Emma, was the mistress of Admiral Horatio Nelson. Hamilton acquired a collection of antiquities from Pompeii, which he sold to the British Museum in 1772, thereby stimulating wide interest in the art and culture of classical civilizations. Dr. John Allen (1771-1843) was a political and historical writer. In 1791 he graduated with an MD from the University of Edinburgh. In 1801, in his capacity as a doctor, he accompanied Lord Holland to Spain, and on his return to England became a regular inmate of Holland House.
